Vegetarian Food near Uluwatu

A wood-fired kitchen on the Bukit in Bali, near Uluwatu, that is vegetarian-friendly rather than vegetarian, and straight about it: some vegan options, not a vegan restaurant.

Looking for a vegetarian restaurant near Uluwatu?
Shaffa is a restaurant on the Bukit in Bali, near Uluwatu, where a vegetarian orders from the whole menu rather than from a corner of it. Twenty-three dishes are marked vegetarian, and the kitchen is Mediterranean and Middle Eastern, cooked over wood, so the vegetarian food in Bali you find here is hummus, babaganoush, masala falafel in crispy buckwheat, a mushroom risotto and a stroganoff made from jackfruit.
In the morning it works as a vegetarian cafe on this side of Bali: specialty coffee, cold pressed juices, and an acai bowl near Uluwatu that you do not have to queue for. For healthy food near Uluwatu there are the bowls and porridges, and for a vegan breakfast near Uluwatu the two bowls made on nut and almond milk are the place to start. If you are staying down in Jimbaran and looking for a vegetarian restaurant, it is twelve minutes up the hill.
Twenty-three dishes, not a side list
The leaf on the printed menu marks 23 dishes: seven of the sixteen sharing plates, the jackfruit stroganoff off the wood-fire menu, a risotto, a ravioli, three salads and ten things at breakfast.
Vegetarian, not vegan
Most of them use cheese, yogurt or eggs. There are vegan options, and the kitchen will tell you what can be made without dairy or eggs, but this is not a vegan restaurant and we would rather say so.
From eight until the kitchen closes
Breakfast runs 08:00 to 14:00 and the rest of the menu opens at noon, so a vegetarian can eat here from the first coffee to the last plate.

Vegan options, and how to ask for them
Shaffa is not a vegan restaurant, and it is better to say so than to let you find out at the table. Most of the vegetarian dishes are built with cheese, yogurt or eggs: labne on the broccoli, mozzarella in the shakshuka, parmesan in the risotto, feta on the avocado salad.
There are vegan options. For vegan food in Bali, that is the honest picture here: not a vegan menu, but a kitchen that will tell you what it can make without dairy or eggs. On the printed menu the Acai Bowl is made with nut milk and the Power Kick Smoothie Bowl with almond milk, which makes them the natural start to a vegan breakfast. Beyond those, tell the kitchen that you eat vegan when you order and they will tell you what can be made without dairy or eggs. Coffee can be made with plant-based milk instead of dairy: just tell your waiter when you order. If what you need is a fully vegan restaurant near Uluwatu, this is not it. If you need vegan-friendly food at a table where everyone else can order what they like, it works well.
